Quiz question (those in Mexico need not answer)

IMG_3133

Busy today, so here’s a quick puzzle for you.  What is this gadet that middle class Mexican ladies carry in their purses?  Indispensable when dining.  And note that cute angel perched on a pole.

And please don’t tell me these have taken other parts of the world by storm and that Mexico is not leading the pack.

Edit.

Well, Judith Klinger gets the prize for the most imaginative answer. Problem is, such a thing probably exists.  Interesting Heather, that this exists in the Philippinese as well.

And here’s a photo of a bag  swinging from the hook.

It looks like a purse hanger to me. No I don’t use one, but they are in the gift stores in Lexington, KY, with various decorative icons. Reminds me of my last trip to the Phillipines, where I had lunch at an upscale restaurant, and the waiter could NOT rest or leave us til my “purse” (a big bike messenger bag when I travel) had it’s own seat at the table. It just could not stay on the floor.

A purse hanger! I actually hadn’t seen one of these until a friend from Brazil pulled it out of her purse when we were enjoying lunch together last year. Funny to hear it is in Mexico now too! My husband and I used to live in Queretaro, and I really enjoy reading your blog and seeing you mention so many familiar things most people here in the States have have never heard of!

It’s a purse-holder that rests on the side of the table. I’ve only seen one of these once in my life, but it was in the US, not Mexico.

I agree with all the above answers. I believe my aunt had one of these and showed me a while back– would come in very handy at a restaurant when you don’t have time to keep up with your purse while trying to eat.

It is definitely a purse hanger. I have two and LOVE them. They come in many different styles and shapes. Since I didn’t know where to find them locally in VA, mine were ordered on-line.

Although it may look like a purse hook, its actually a scale, you hang your entree from the hook for just a moment and it gives you the exact weight, an accurate calorie count of the entree and any accompanying sauce, it can also be programmed to determine the height, weight, eye color and availability of the chef who prepared the entree. An absolute must in any savvy woman’s purse.

    Rachel,
One of my Mexican friends told me that she never puts a purse on the floor. So, our purses occupied chairs at a table in the US. I see now how the purses could not be on the floor and not take up table space.

Thanks for the moment of cross-cultural sharing.

    Ruth :)
