It’s becoming increasingly evident that much of what passes for extra virgin olive oil is a scam. This newsletter from Silvestro Silvestori is a good introduction (and the rest of his site is interesting too). Wish I could follow his suggestions for getting a good oil.
It’s not just the US that’s worried about obesity. Here’s what the police force in Aguascalientes, Mexico is proposing to do about obesity. Thanks to Kay Curtis for this.

Mexico produces a bit of olive oil and some of it quite good but it is not readily available. (My French son-in-law was SHOCKED 12 years ago when, on a sailing trip from Los Angeles, CA, to La Paz, Baja CA Sur, he found that he could not buy olive oil. He thought, essentially, that he was going from CA to Spain.) During the 7 years that my primary residence was in Baja CA Norte, neighbors would make periodic trips to the Valle de Guadalupe (SE of Ensenada) more for the olive oil of the region than for the wines. It is grown, pressed and bottled on the local farms and by some wineries. For several years the EU and MX have been in a dispute with WTO over tariff imposed by MX to protect its infant industry. I wonder how that will turn out.
