The price of a better diet
Scott Kilman in the Wall Street Journal sets rising grain prices in a context wider than biofuels. It’s the demand in Asia and Latin America for meat that drives much of this increase. I live just a few miles from the Mexican Bajio that for centuries has provided grain for humans and animals. And it’s not just Asians and Latin Americans who want more. Americans and Europeans demand fresh fruits and vegetables all year round. So Mexico imports grain for animals (less so for human use) and is converting the Bajio to fruits and vegetables.
